What is the due date?

Calculating the due date is important for the midwife to compare your baby's expected development with how your baby has actually developed. This way, the midwife can see if your baby is well on track. But what exactly does the due date mean? It is an indication of the date you will probably give birth to your little big miracle. Calculating your due date

There’s nothing more exciting than holding a positive pregnancy test in your hands. Once you have processed the joyful news (can we ever?), you will probably be curious to calculate the due date. How to do that? We will explain it to you below. Just keep in mind that calculating the due date is not an exact science. Only 5% of all babies are actually born on the due date.

So here’s how to calculate:

• Add 40 weeks (280 days) to the first day of your last period. This method is quite reliable if you have a regular cycle.
• For each day your cycle is shorter or longer than 28 days, add a day to your due date.

A pregnancy officially lasts 40 weeks, but as you can see from the calculation, you are actually only 38 weeks pregnant. In fact, a pregnancy lasts 38 weeks on average from conception on, but the first day of your last period is used to calculate the due date. From that day on, the pregnancy will last around 40 weeks.
